Patient of the Week - Rockstar the Pied Butcherbird

Age: Juvenile Sex: Unknown
Found: At Mooloolah with a swollen chest and head.
Transported to: The Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital by a concerned member of the public.
Veterinary Assessment: Dr Amber assessed Rockstar and discovered a ruptured air sac had caused air to accumulate over the head and neck. Rockstar was also very hungry.
Treatment: Dr Amber anaesthetised Rockstar and used a needle to aspirate the air accumulated under the skin, which was causing all the puffiness.
Future: Rockstar has now been deflated, and will spend the next week or so in care with a local bird carer before being returned back into the wild.
AZWH Statistic: We rely heavily on public awareness and concern for injured animals, with almost one-third of patients admitted to the hospital done so by ordinary citizens.
