Patient of the week - Winney Moo the Koala

Winney Moo the Koala

Winney Moo the Koala  Nov 19, 2011

Age: Sub-adult (3 years)     Sex: Male

Found: At a truck stop in Windera, west of Gympie, with suspected cystitis.

Transported to: The Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital by Murray from Sunshine Coast Koala Wildlife Rescue.

Veterinary Assessment: Dr Bec's assessment revealed Winney Moo wasnot only suffering from cystitis, but x-rays showed he had also fractured both of his hind legs, which were swollen and covered in mud.

Treatment: Winney Moo was placed on a course of antibiotics to fight the cystitis, and casts were applied to his legs to stablise the fractures. He is currently undergoing physiotherapy to regain strength and mobility in his legs.

Future: Winney Moo will soon move to a leafy outdoor enclosure, and will remain in care until he is able to be returned to natural habitat in the wild as a healthy young breeding male.

AZWH Statistic: Almost 800 koalas have been admitted so far in 2011.
